This is clearly a high quality matte box but Im sorry to say I completely agree with the only other review here, which is to say that this absolutely isnt a workable solution for a 15mm set up. Its extremely frustrating to spend 800 only to find out that it doesnt effectively do what Tilta suggest. The only way to mount this on a 15mm rod system is on the very end of the rods, and you cant avoid the rods actually hitting the body of the matte box when you swing it shut. This product is only useable with a 19mm system, which I dont have. Ill be escalating this to attempt to recoup some costs because one way or another, I have to either buy a 19mm system just to fit the matte box, or I have to sell a brand new piece of kit second hand. Very disappointing and I dont like the sound of the response to this from Tilta, as described by the other reviewer. I only wish Id read that review before purchasing this matte boxbecause it would have stopped me!
the mattebox is built like a tank and it’s nice to use the mattebox. it’s the well known tilta quality and design, which is very pleasing. The one and only issue ist the construction of the 15mm adapter. using it means the 15mm rods will hit the mattebox body and get blocked by the mattebox. if you change the lens to something shorter, you need to replace the 15mm rods on your rig. the same if you use a longer lens. Problem b is that the distance from the rods to the center of the lens is absolutelely minimum and the mattebox is only usable in the lowest of all positions. So if the distance between your rods and your lens ist variing you cant use this mattebox and it becomes useless. you could fix the problem with a riser tray, ra. 1/3 or 1/2 of the 19mm riser which is included. but its not and you cant 3D print it because its on a very fragile positon. sorry tilta, but for a 1k $ Mattebox which says 15mm Rod Adapter included and the answer from the tilta support “it is like it is, we can’t fix the problem” thats not good to keep your clients. Most of them are B2B users and they can’t return it. very dissapointing, please remove the 15mm adapter or fix it!!!
so its an awesome Mattebox overall. built like a tank. A bit overly heavy, but it’ll hold up. It would be nice if some of the excess metal would come off but at least it’s all mounting points. My real complaint is that the 15mm rod adapter needs a half or 1 inch riser so that it could clear the trays. which doesn’t come with it(and may not exist) hell even a 1/4in would give it enough. as is, it hits the step down trays making it pretty useless on most 15mm builds unless you use your own neoprene lens stepdown. This also means swapping to different prime lengths means readjusting your rod length. If i can’t find a riser or have one machined, this may be my first Tilta return.
